The first choice is not always the best choice
Mareike Spaleck is a German fitness model that graced several ads and magazine covers. Together with her husband, she runs a private gym and also published some books on her passion: fitness, health and working out. Mareike is very active in the media (she made a few TV appearances) and has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media. So when she is happy about something, she wants to tell the world. Mareike had her new home built in laidback Zwingenberg (Hesse, Germany) back in 2013. The house has a magnificent roof terrace with a gorgeous view over the neighbouring fields. The ideal place for lounging, or maybe even as the setting for one of her online fitness tutorials. But when the house was built, she and her husband did not give the flooring of the terrace much thought. But with hindsight, she regrets having chosen concrete tiles. It was time for an overhaul. She explains why.
The importance of feeling well on your terrace
“When we built our house 7 years ago, we didn’t pay too much attention to the terrace covering. We went for concrete tiles: the easiest and cheapest option at the time. So we had this concrete floor here for years and I have to say, the floor largely determines the look and feel of a terrace. I noticed in the last few years that I never really felt at home on the terrace. And it was cumbersome to keep the tiles clean. That’s why we decided to rewind and restart. Putting a new floor covering from scratch.”

“For me, the feel-good factor was essential in my choice of a new terrace floor. I was looking for something that doesn’t only look good, but that also feels pleasant because I love to walk around at home barefoot. We did a little research on the internet and came across this innovative Cedral Terrace decking system made of fibre cement. This makes the terrace ultra-durable, stable and weather-resistant, but the non-slip terrace boards also feel soft and comfortable, unlike the cold concrete tiles we had. And the boards are so much easier to keep clean.”
Design options to suit any taste
“The decking boards come in different natural colours that will light up directly after installation. We went for light grey because it nicely suits the overall look of the rest of our home. We decided on an aluminium substructure, but you can also use wood, both are possible. We are very happy with our choice because it is an absolutely new, feel-good terrace. Even our dog Rocky is fond of it.”
“Our roof terrace area is pretty large and we use it a lot. When the weather is nice, basically from spring to autumn, we consider this as a second living room under the blue sky. The only thing that I would still like to do is getting some new lounge furniture and decoration to create our little heaven on the roof of our house. I’m really looking forward to give our terrace a whole new style. The foundation is laid, now the rest! Maybe you’ll get to see it in one of my next videos.”
