If you invest in a Japanese ornamental fishpond, you also want to create a comfortable space to enjoy watching them. That’s why the Menzel family created a new terrace next to the pond where they spend lots of quality time in summer. Michael explains why they chose Cedral Terrace.

An oasis of relaxation and tranquillity

The Menzel family lives in a gorgeous detached house in Sulingen, Germany. Some years ago they decided to create a pond in their garden to keep koi. These are colourful varieties of carps that were originally domesticated and bred in Japan. Keeping Japanese koi requires dedication and attention. The fish only grow to considerable sizes (up to 1 meter) and only develop beautiful colours in ideal living conditions. So you can imagine that the family – especially Michael – spends quite some time in the garden taking care of the fish. The garden is their oasis of relaxation and tranquillity. And to properly enjoy the garden and the fish, the family decided to renovate the old terrace and redesign the centrepiece of their oasis in an appealing and practical way.

A full makeover of the terrace

The previous terrace had had its best time and was looking worn. That’s why the Menzel family decided to give the terrace a full overhaul. On 4 x 6 meters, they created a new space for outside quality time. They replaced the old terrace boards with light grey Cedral Terrace fibre-cement planks and they covered the main area of the terrace with a transparent roof, so that they could leave the garden furniture outside, rain or shine. The Cedral Terrace boards were easy to install thanks to the click system. Michael single-handedly laid the terrace on an aluminium substructure. With the help of a few friends, of course, who then immediately could test the new garden asset with a drink in their hand and a contemplative view of the koi. They approved! On the edge of the pond, Michael kept a fringe of wooden terrace, as a stylish transition between the lounge area and the water. So Cedral Terrace planks can be easily combined with other materials to form original and harmonious designs.

A conscious choice for Cedral Terrace

"We wanted a floor that was easy-maintenance and very durable, because we spend a lot of time outside and use the terrace intensively,” explains Michael. “Wood was not an option, because it needs to be stained every so many years to keep it in shape. Too much fuss. We also ruled out PVC and tropical hardwood because of ecological reasons. That’s why we chose Cedral Terrace. The flooring planks are made of fibre cement, an environmentally friendly composite material that stands the test of time." "We also have a dog,” Michael continues, “and plastic floorboards and ceramic tiles tend to get extremely hot in summer. The Cedral Terrace decking boards are dimensionally stable: they withstand all weather types and they don't get too hot. So you can walk barefoot on the terrace in summer without any problem, and the same goes for dog paws."

Soft, non-slippery and easy maintenance

“The Cedral planks have a velvety soft surface, so they are surprisingly pleasant to walk on. You can also feel that they are more stable than wood – they yield less – but they don’t feel hard at all as you would expect from concrete or tiles. The boards are also non-slippery, even when wet. That’s of course an important quality around a pond.” Michael also recommends Cedral Terrace because of the easy maintenance: “Cedral Terrace boards are colour-fast because they are made with pigments inside the material. That means there is no need to paint or stain the planks. The only thing we need to do is to pass a mop and the terrace is as new again.”
