Southern living in northern Germany: a new terrace in Hamburg
With elegant floor covering, trendy furniture and the right plants, you can turn your terrace or balcony into a little paradise. The new sun deck of the non-profit building cooperative Bergedorf-Bille EG in Hamburg is a superb example of what’s possible. The terrace with a maritime jetty look, made of easy-maintenance fibre-cement planks, offers the tenants a generous space to relax.
Trendy developments in Hamburg
Hamburg is one of the top 20 cities in the world when it comes to comfortable living. With the new HafenCity development, the urban centre has expanded by 40 percent since the turn of the millennium. 157 hectares of the former port and industrial area were reconverted into a trendy new residential area. Around 7,500 apartments saw the light, creating a new home for around 15,000 inhabitants. 10.5 kilometres of quay promenades invite the people to linger by the water. Since summer 2020, the residents of Am Kaiserkai 3-7 can experience waterside living in private on their own terrace. In an absolute premium location on the Elbe, the Bergedorf-Bille building cooperative erected two eight-storey residential buildings in 2006 as cooperative housing with spacious tenant gardens. A relaxed life in a prime location and exemplary social standards go hand in hand here. More recently, the owner asked PFP Architects to design new terraces to enhance the residential complex
A velvety, durable and non-slip surface
The architects chose light grey Cedral Terrace boards to create a sophisticated and stable outdoor living area of more than 20 square meters. The 175 mm wide and 3,150 mm long decking boards used for the terrace are reminiscent of classic jetties on the Elbe, merging in nicely with the environment. The straight terrace planks provide a generous surface effect and allow inside and outside spaces to merge. The Cedral Terrace fibre-cement deck boards have a velvety soft surface, offering a surprisingly pleasant walking experience. Because of its special sanded finish, Cedral provides a novel sensation, unlike any other. The planks are also non-slip, even in wet conditions. This makes them a safe choice for any terrace, providing a natural grip in any weather.
A perfect combination of practicality, beauty and safety
Cedral Terrace is made of fibre cement and is specially developed for outdoor spaces such as terraces and balconies. This composite material is made of an environmentally friendly mixture of Portland cement, organic fibres – similar to those used the paper industry – and water. The ingenious combination of cement and fibres make Cedral Terrace a solid and durable solution, with a life expectancy of 50 year. You can choose from two widths and four colourfast earthy tones, ranging from sand to red and grey, offering endless design possibilities for your terrace. The colours were developed in collaboration with an international team of landscape architects to suit the most varied projects. Due to the natural aging process, the fibre-cement planks weather gently and subtly, to create a beautiful natural patina.
Ultra-resistant, dimensionally stable and easy
Cedral Terrace planks are absolutely weather-resistant. They are waterproof and don’t shrink in the winter cold nor expand in the summer heat. Due to its mineral composition, fibre cement does not rot, corrode or rust, and it is impervious to rodents and insects. Cedral Terrace also has excellent fire behaviour: it is non-flammable and non-combustible. So you can barbecue on the terrace in all safety. The 20 mm thick boards are easy to install and to maintain. Cedral Terrace can be easily fitted using a user-friendly clip technology. There is no need to glue, sand or wet cut the planks. The fibre-cement deck boards are more stable than alternatives such as wood. Maintenance is easy – simply mopping the surface keeps your terrace as new – and you don’t need to treat or stain your Cedral Terrace to enjoy it for long years on end.
